Moving to Billund. Lego, Legoland, Lego House and... hot dogs?

It's been a few weeks since we made the move from France to Denmark and I probably should have sat down to write something a little sooner but, you know how it is. So much going on and so much to do.

Moving on though, I can now share with you a little of our moving experience. Before we came here, I really didn't know what to expect. I had never really thought much about Denmark until the option came up to relocate. It had never been on my radar as a place to visit, much less a place to live and here we were passing up sunny California for... *blank.* When we arrived it was dark, 1am in the morning, thanks to my husband's need to do the trip in one go rather then take a hotel and stop over night. I'm pretty sure we had been on the road for around 12-14 hours so my curiosity was dampened by my need to get out, stretch my legs and get our two year old into a bed and our cats somewhere they could relieve themselves. Did I tell you how good they'd been in the car? No? They were troopers. Not a peep or a pee out of either of them. Still, they needed out.

I took in through the darkness lots and lots of trees. Not bad, I love a good forest but that really was all I could see. Any first impressions would have to wait for morning. And what a morning! Now, a little back story time, hold on. Before moving here we'd spent around a month staying with my in laws (who are lovely!), and you know how it is staying in someone else's house? You're never really comfortable, or yourself and it's pretty hard to relax. Before that we'd lived in our suburban house in a cul-de-sac with our collection of neighbours, many of whom had dogs who really loved barking back and forth with each other and our immediate neighbours (remind me never to share a wall with other people ever again), had FOUR kids. Four kids who had no end of energy to run up and down stairs, kick walls, scream at each other and apparently train a whole circus of elephants from dawn to midnight. So, when I woke up here in our temporary accommodation to absolute silence, it was ... whatever the opposite of mind blowing is. Bliss! And that's a big factor here. It's a really calm, quiet place. Every where you go, you either see no one at all or people just calmly going about their business, riding their bikes, pushing prams, walking their dogs who are also pretty chill. Now this might sound boring and for some it probably is but for me, it's like that feeling of sinking into a warm bubble bath. A lot of the stress just starts to ebb slowly away.

Over the past few weeks I've taken a little time to explore some of Billund as my tiny tearaway is extremely active and needs a lot of entertaining. My bigger tearaway is also a giant kid so one of the first things he did was get us all annual passes to Legoland and something called Lego House. Legoland was lovely. After being used to Disneyland Paris it didn't quite match the standard I had hoped for but in fairness, it would be pretty hard for anything to do that, especially when I'm a huge lover of almost all things Disney. However, it's a really cute park and for anyone who loves Lego, it wouldn't disappoint. Lots of rides for all ages and a lot to look at and interact with. The Danish weather is a bit wet and windy which also takes the shine off but despite this, I would absolutely recommend the park to anyone thinking of going. To avoid some of the rain we also have been several times to the aforementioned Lego House. Now this wasn't what I was expecting at all. I thought it would be a bit boring. I like Lego but I'm not mad for it, and my little one is the same, he likes it but he's really too young to quite get it yet. Once you step inside though, it really is quite impressive. A massive Lego tree stretches up the entire building from bottom to top with a spiral stair case leading up and around it. You have a little Lego shop on your right, a café, a restaurant (this is actually really unique), a space for kids to play with some foam Lego bricks and then once inside it's a crazy interactive play zone. Even I was impressed.

So everything is great, everything is calm but it's beginning to dawn on me that every where we go, we see food places selling hot dogs. Hot dogs are great but this was something else. They're everywhere! I had to poke a friend of mine who's familiar with the Danish culture and do a bit of googling but who knew? Danes LOVE hot dogs! And honestly... I'm right there with them. These bad boys are delicious. I have to restrain myself from eating them every day. I may have even gotten a little Lego hot dog key chain as a way to embrace this new life.

If you've made it this far, well done because this was mostly a ramble but I'd love to do some more in depth reviews on Billund and Denmark, specifically Legoland and the Lego House to begin with so if you'd like to read more about those, let me know! For now, I'm going to sit back and enjoy the silence! Hej hej
